For South African visa applications where a police clearance certificate is required, the applicant should furnish a certificate from any country he or she has resided in for over 12 months. The process and requirements for applying for a South African police clearance certificate are as follows:

Applying from Within South Africa

Applicants looking to apply for a Police Clearance South Africa from within the county are required to do so from any police station;

What police need to start the process:

  • A full set of fingerprints;
  • A full name and surname;
  • Date and place of birth and;
  • A copy of the applicant’s identity document (ID) as well as their actual ID as proof of identity.
  • R114.00 per application

Where to apply:

  • At the applicant’s local police station which will escalate it to the South African Police Service’s Criminal Record Centre (CRC) in Pretoria which is solely responsible for issuing clearance certificates.
  • Applicants can also deliver their completed application to the Head of the South African Criminal Record Centre, Private Bag X309, Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa, 0001.
  • It can also be delivered by courier to the Head of the South African Criminal Record Centre, Bothongo Plaza West at the Criminal Record Centre’s CSC which is in room 14, first floor located on 271 Baard Street Pretoria

Applying from Outside South Africa

Applicants that would like to apply for their PCC from abroad can do so by visiting their local police station, or the nearest South African embassy. Applications done through a foreign police station will require the following:

  • A full set of fingerprints;
  • A full name and surname;
  • Date and place of birth and;
  • A copy of the applicant’s identity document (ID) as well as their actual ID as proof of identity.
  • R114.00 per application

The police station where the applicant applied will forward the complete application to the Criminal Record Centre. Alternatively, the applicant may deliver the completed application in person or mail the application to:

Processing and Collection

On average the process takes approximately 14 working days from the day the application is received by the CRC. On completion, the certificate will be mailed to the applicant by post. Individuals abroad are responsible for their own postage. Applicants can arrange for the certificate to be collected via courier service at their own expense. The SA police clearance certificate is valid for 6 months from issuance.
